Bali Swing Ubud: how to get the shot

The swing arc, the giant nest and the 78m drop. When to go for soft light, where to stand, the wide lens that keeps the valley in frame, and whether the photo package is worth it.

Updated October 2026 · Bali Creator Gear

That frame you have seen a hundred times, a person small on a wooden swing, arcing out with the whole jungle valley open behind them, is simpler than it looks. It's a wide shot taken from the ground as the swing comes toward the camera. Go between 8 and 10 in the morning for soft light and no queue. Photo-spot entry at the Bali Swing starts around Rp 100.000, and the full swing package runs to Rp 650.000. Most people get a flat, tilted phone photo instead, because they shoot standing level with the seat and crop the valley out. Stand lower, go wider, and time the push.

Is the Bali Swing worth it?

If the swing photo is on your list, yes, as long as you treat it as a photo set and not a quiet bit of jungle. The Bali Swing is a built park: a row of swings over a real valley, plus a giant bird nest and a heart-shaped platform set up as photo props, with staff who push you and a queue behind you. On a clear morning, early, it delivers exactly the shot you came for.

Skip it if you want untouched nature or a crowd-free morning. By late morning there are tour buses and a line at every swing, and the valley fills with other people's selfie sticks. Skip the biggest swing too if heights frighten you. The highest single swing sits about 78 metres above the valley, and while you're harnessed for every ride, it is a long way down. The 10 and 15 metre swings give almost the same photo with far less fear.

The shot: where to stand and the lens that keeps the valley in frame

There are really three set-piece shots at the Bali Swing, and they all want the same thing: the valley kept in the frame, not cropped out.

The swing arc. This is the one. Your photographer stands on the ground, a little below the seat, and shoots up as the swing comes forward. Photographers who shoot it say to use a wide-angle lens so the valley and the palms stay in the frame behind you, and to fire in burst as the swing moves, because the good frame lasts a fraction of a second. Time the release for the forward peak of the arc, when your dress or legs are flung out and the ropes are near vertical.

The giant nest. A ladder leans against the bird nest so you can climb in, then it's taken away for the photo, so you look like you're perched in the treetops with nothing under you. Shoot it slightly from below to hide the support and keep the canopy behind.

The heart platform. You step out to the very edge of the heart, anchored, and look out over the foliage. This one reads best wide and from behind, with the valley doing the work.

When should you go to the Bali Swing?

Go early. Between about 8 and 10 in the morning the light is soft and low, which flatters the green and keeps the sky from blowing out behind the swing. It's also the quiet window. One group who went found few visitors at 9am, and tour buses arriving from about 11, after which you queue for every swing and share the valley with everyone else's photos.

Dry season, roughly April to October, gives you the greenest valley and the clearest sky. Wear a long flowing dress or skirt that catches the wind, in a bright or solid colour that stands out against the jungle. Plain white and strong colours read far better than busy patterns in these shots. Most parks rent a dress on-site if you did not bring one.

On drones: the parks fly their own for the aerial clips they sell, but no park we checked publishes a rule about bringing your own. Ask the park before you launch, and read our Bali drone-rules guide for the national limits and the fake rules to ignore. The wide shot that keeps the valley in frame

The swing arc lives or dies on the lens. A phone at arm's length crops the valley to a strip. An ultra-wide on an APS-C body keeps the palms, the drop and you in one frame, and the body shoots fast bursts so you actually catch the forward peak. This is also the kit you'd carry for the rest of an Ubud day, so it's not a one-shot rental. If you would rather travel light, our camera rental page has the pocket cameras that handle the same day from your hand.

Starting points, to adjust on the day:

The clean drone reveal

The clip that makes the Bali Swing look enormous is the drone pulling back: it starts tight on the swing, then falls away to show how far the valley drops below. A sub-250g drone like the DJI Mini gets it and packs down to a day bag. In midday sun you want ND filters, or the footage looks sharp and jittery instead of smooth. Fly it only where you're allowed, and ask the park first. See our drone rental page for the three Mini drones and what each one does.

The morning, start to finish

Leave Ubud early with cash in small notes and your dress sorted. Aim to be at the gate by 8, before the buses. Pay, walk to the main swing while it's quiet, and get the arc shot first with the wide lens, shooting burst as the swing comes forward. Then work the nest and the heart platform while the light is still soft. If you brought a drone and the park says yes, fly the reveal before 10, when the valley is clear and the crowd is thin. You'll be done and out by the time the queues build, with the one frame you actually came home for. You'll do this once, so it's worth getting the gear that keeps the valley in the shot.

Quick answers

What's the best time to visit the Bali Swing?

Is the Bali Swing photo package worth it?

The venue's own photo service is Rp 200.000 per person for all the pictures they take, which is fair if you came alone. If you want a wide swing arc plus a drone reveal, a private photographer-and-drone tour runs from about US$65 for 50 or more edited photos.

A long flowing dress or skirt that catches the wind, in a bright or solid colour that stands out against the green. Most parks rent one on-site for about Rp 150.000 to 300.000 if you did not bring one.
